Siliga David Setoga
Samoan
Siliga's work unashamedly utilises the format of the
teeshirt and his
presentations remain faithful to this idiom. While many artists
reference popular cultural sources and translate them into alternative
formats,
Siliga's images are always returned to the teeshirt format and his work
has developed through his commitment to producing and presenting shirts
for a weekly trader's stall in Otara markets. Through this relationship
with his local community, Siliga has been able to reflect on the way
local communities take an ambivalent stance in relation to global brands,
simultaneously embracing and resisting their influence.
