Donna's Light Pou are lightboxes that extend
references to the walls of
the wharenui while acknowledging the urban space that they occupy.
Presenting work in a format that is rooted in commercial advertising,
Donna
reinterprets established codes of woven narrative from a position
within contemporary Maori life. Each box contains patterns that reference
the decorative traditions of the Wharenui but are deliberately separate,
portable and reliant on a local power source for their illumination.
Installed within the converted warehouse building that is now Randolph
Street Gallery, they utilise conventions of industrial production while
generating a dialogue with a traditional environment from the
perspective of mobile urban experience.
