Kiwi makes paintings that consciously reflect overlapping
worlds of
global popular culture and local communities. Peter Mahaki comes out
of an
observation of the drawings children produce on the floor of the living
room playfully combining star wars with gang patches and portraits.
Identifying the loaded references of these drawings, Kiwi reformats
their
graphic languages within the world of painting. Working directly on
canvas, using expressionistic painterly gesture alongside naturalistic
rendering and direct crayon drawing, collisions of formal painterly
languages and cultural references are put forward as a reminder of complex
social dynamics.
