Matt explores the rapidly expanding world of graph art
and its
relationship with painterly traditions. His work is generated by a mining
of
the constantly evolving languages of graph art as it is observed in
the
street, on tee shirts, in magazines and on the net. Refers to what
Refers is literally located on the street side of the exhibition venue
and
its billboard format grounds it firmly within the culture of the street.
The way in which the painting is organised is less obvious in that the
compositional development of the work relies heavily on subtle plays
of
layered information. Colour, line and form are intertwined with
instinct and delicacy so that motifs are filtered and reorganised within
painterly compositions that celebrate the sources of these motifs but
also
the formal language of painting.
